2010 KHA Annual Meeting Highlights:

Approximately 65 people attended the KHA Annual meeting held in Bowling Green, KY on July 31, 2010. Scott Burks, KHA President, welcomed all in attendance and introduced the sponsors and special guests.

John Meents, AHA/HPI Field Representative addressed the changes in the Hereford industry over the past 10 years, specifically the quality of the cattle, calling it a ‘huge step forward.’ He then called on the recognition of Austin Cole, Luke Epling, and Alex Popplewell for their achievements at the Junior Nationals.

Brent Tolle from  Merial Pharmaceuticals, co-sponsor of this year’s Annual Meeting, spoke to the audience about the strides the Hereford breed has made over the past years and the importance of the cow/calf segment of the long term outlook.  Brent also made a very informative presentation on the economics of Brand vs. Generic pharmaceuticals.

Gil Ray from Pleasant Hill Farms, co-sponsor of this year’s Annual Meeting, spoke on the performance of cross production and the importance of the Hereford influence.

Lowell Atwood was introduced and recognized for his outstanding efforts in the Kentucky Hereford Influence Feeder Sales.  Lowell spoke briefly on the great success of the past two sales, the upcoming Fall Sale in October, and the support of John Woolfolk and the Tennessee Hereford Influence Sale.  Scott Burks also presented Lowell with a gift of appreciation from the Kentucky Hereford Association.

John Woolfolk was then introduced and spoke about the growing demand of the Hereford breed in the beef industry and  commended the current AHA Board of Directors referring to them as a ‘cohesive group that worked together’ and their dedication to the Hereford industry.  He also addressed the research being done on Hereford breed defects and the current strides being made in DNA/genetic testing.

We want to thank each of these men for their participation and support of this year’s Annual Meeting as well as the leadership they offer to the our industry.
